TANTRUM

Monday, June 29, 2009
In 2002 three teenagers, tired of the meaningless music being pumped into Sri Lankan veins through the mainstream, got an idea to form a band and realize the potency of the one pure form of music they all loved, Heavy Metal. At the time they barely knew the rudiments of instrumentation, and actually getting a band off the ground seemed like an unrealistic dream for the 16 year old school mates. But as time went on, there was a significant improvement, and at the beginning of 2004 the guys decided to take this more seriously after realizing the possible potential for a Metal Band in the Sri Lankan music industry, and the name 'Tantrum’ was born.

The band's style is considered Thrash Metal, with a touch of technical Death Metal with various melodic elements. Classical, Blues, Jazz & Eastern elements are also influential to the band when creating music.

The band recorded and released their first single titled “The Destroyer” which became a Number 1 hit on the local chart show (TNL’s SL Hot 10). This earned Tantrum some recognition in the metal scene. Soon afterwards, Tantrum released their 2nd single titled “Alone”, which proved that the band had great talent and it impressed many of the listeners, and so Tantrum had the fortune of starting off with two smash singles. Tantrum was also one of the few bands to take part in TNL Onstage (a battle of the bands like competition in Sri Lanka) for the 1st time & come out winners of the competition. This was in 2005. Tantrum then released an EP titled "The Destruction Begins" in 2006 and soon after the band went through a major line up change. Currently the line up is as follows -

Javeen Soysa - Lead Vocals & Bass Guitar
Akila Pieris - Rhythm & Lead Guitar
Malinda Senanayake - Rhythm & Lead Guitar
Tharaka Senevirathne - Drums

Ever since the change the bands music evolved into genres stated above and the usage of crushing 7 string guitars became a unique and a first ever in Sri Lanka. Tantrum has also managed to appear in countless number of interviews, front covers of magazines and press articles etc, as well as electronic media around Asia and has been labeled as one of the leading Metal bands in Sri Lanka. The band cannot wait to get out there and delight the Metal World by providing them with dynamic music and performances to break their necks moshing to. Tantrum is looking forward to open the floodgates to a whole new level of music, and take Sri Lankan heavy metal to greater heights, and their journey has just begun

Stigmata (Sri Lankan Band)

Sunday, June 28, 2009
Suresh De Silva, Andrew Obeysekara and Tennyson Napolean formed the band in 1999 at S. Thomas' College, Mt Lavinia, where they were schoolmates. They chose the name Stigmata after the 1998 album by melodic death metal band Arch Enemy. The band's style is a mix of thrash metal along with some death metal, and hard rock influences, laced with nuances of classical, Latin, jazz, blues, baila, and eastern rhythms. Enter 2009 and Stigmata is not only the pioneering Heavy Metal Band in Sri Lanka but have chiseled and carved out a sound that has evolved; epic landscapes that ebb and flow with intensity and evocative grandeur.

With bass player Shehan Gray and drummer Anik Jayasekara they released their first single, "Fear", which topped the local radio rock-chart show.In 2000 they recorded another, "Voices," which was a sensation in the stagnant local music industry, and was a chart topping hit. In 2001 the band took on drummer Dilukshan Jayawardena following the departure of Jayasekara due to personal reasons. The band released their first EP, Morbid Indiscretion, in 2002, containing the singles "The Dying Winter Sleeps," "Thicker Than Blood," and the instrumental "Andura." At the time the band also covered music by international bands such as Deep Purple, Metallica, and Led Zeppelin, as well as bands not so popular in the country at that time such as Iron Maiden, Iced Earth, Judas Priest, Cradle of Filth, and System of a Down, which made them revolutionary by exposing Sri Lankans to music many in the country had never heard before.

In 2003, drummer Nisho Fernando joined the band following the departure of Dilukshan for higher education. The success of the original singles released up to this point culminated in the band launching their first album, Hollow Dreams, in August 2003 on the local Rock Company label. The band continued to influence many youth in the country to form their own Heavy Metal bands and carve a unique Sri Lankan Heavy Metal sound.

In 2004, Vije Dhas became Stigmata's bass player, after Shehan Gray left for Australia. Former drummer Dilukshan temporarily stepped in after Nisho Fernando left the band earlier that year. In 2005 the band found permanent drummer Osanda Wangeesa and the range of the band was further increased, with the addition of double bass drumming. In late 2004 the band also recorded the highly successful acoustic track titled "Lucid" which made innovative use of the Indian tabla, played by Sri Lankan percussionist Jananath Warakagoda. This was a prelude to the heavier, electric version of this song released on the bands' second studio album, Silent Chaos Serpentine, in February 2006. This was followed up by concerts in the Maldive Islands in June 2006. Drummer Ranil 'Jacky' Senarath joined the band in August 2005 after the departure of Osanda. Vije Dhas left the Band in 2008 and the Band now have their long time friend and bassist extraordinaire Javin Soysa (Tantrum) who performed with the Band in Maldives in 2006. Tenny, Andrew, Suresh, Jacky and Javin are prepared to take Stigmata to a new, unprecedented terrain creating monumental music while proving they are untouchable as a Live entity.

The lyrical themes of the band are generally from poetry by the bands' vocalist cum lyricist Suresh and cover topics such as apathy, child abuse, politics, war, social degradation and inner struggle. However the Band's highly anticipated Third Album sees Stigmata dealing with fresh themes like Psychic Voyages, Spiritual and Para-Psychological Endeavors, Suicide etc.

Stigmata just released a crushing new single 'A Dead Rose Wails for Light' which you can listen to on the Band's myspace www.myspace.com/stigmatasrilanka, while the Band was recently interviewed and asked to perform 'A Dead Rose Wails for Light' for Ian Wright's "Out of Bounds" a new travel series on the Discovery Channel. The Band have over 26 thousand hits on their Myspace, have over 70 thousand collective views on www.youtube.com and the Band's Silent Chaos Serpentine has been on Australia's top metal site wwww.themetalforge.com's top 50 reviews of all time for over a year now and is currently at no.12.

Stigmata's Third Album is a work in progress and the Band are targeting July/August to launch the record. Songs like 'Spiral Coma', 'The Summoning Cry of Aries' and 'March of the Saints' showcase the Band's ability to weave technical/extreme tapestries into their melodic and infectious musical palette.

Nemesis (Sri Lankan band)

Nemesis was founded in 2006 by Tharindu Mathew.Their genre is a mix of heavy metal, hard rock and acoustic rock and blues.

With the addition of drummer Trevor Kanagaratnam and vocalist Ruwan Jayakody, and with the help of many session bassists, the band began performing at various popular Rock events around Colombo City.

During the latter part of 2005, Nemesis joined Rock Company, a popular record label in the country that has dedicated itself to promoting local rock musicians. The band continued performing at several Rock Company concerts, alongside popular Sri Lankan Heavy metal giants Stigmata.

In the months that followed, the band released their highly successful Debut Demo single titled Prison Diary, which has been well received and widely appreciated by fans & critics in the Sri Lankan music industry.
The bands' genre during this period of time was dubbed as heavy metal, with their influences ranging from Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Death, Slayer, Opeth, all the way to Jason Becker, Steve Vai and Joe Satriani.

However, in the years that followed, the band went through many lineup changes. July 2006 saw the departure of drummer Trevor Kanagaratnam for higher studies. And in September 2006, Loshaarn Bastian was announced as the permanent bassist of the band.

Along with Session drummer Tharaka Senieveratne (Tantrum, ex- Whirlwind), in November 2006 the band competed in TNL ONSTAGE 2006, the biggest ever concert in the country that is staged annually.

Soon afterwards, Vocalist Ruwan Jayakody left the ranks of Nemesis due to personal reasons. Drummer Chathura Eggala joined the band filling up the void of a permanent drummer. Nemesis began auditioning for vocalist during the following months. The lack of a vocalists caused frustration within the band, which gradually led to the departure of guitarist Matheesha Herath. Thus bringing the band to a temporary hiatus.

In October 2007 Mihindu Ariyaratne was officially announced as new the vocalist cum guitarist of Nemesis, bringing a more eastern influenced sound into the band.Nemesis have since made headlines in many popular Sri Lankan magazines and newspapers.

The band's genre has now progressed into a blend of different genres including elements of blues, eastern music, progressive metal to even acoustic music. Their lyrics address topics such as love, and the on going war on terror that has affected the country.

Dengue Kills - Keep your environment clean

What is Dengue Fever?

Dengue Fever is an illness caused by infection with one of four serotypes of a virus belonging to the genus Flavivirus. Infection with one of these serotypes does not provide cross- protective immunity, so a person living in an area where Dengue Fever transmission occurs can have four dengue fever infections during his or her lifetime.

Dengue [DEN-ghee] is a flu-like viral disease spread by the bite of infected mosquitoes. Dengue hemorrhagic fever is a severe, often fatal, complication of dengue.

How is Dengue Fever spread?

Dengue is spread by the bite of an Aedes mosquito. The mosquito transmits the disease by biting an infected person and then biting someone else.

What is the infectious agent that causes dengue?

Dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fever are caused by any of the dengue family of viruses. Infection with one virus does not protect a person against infection with another.

What are the signs and symptoms of dengue fever and dengue hemorrhagic fever?

Dengue fever usually starts suddenly with a high fever, rash, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, and muscle and joint pain. The severity of the joint pain has given dengue the name "breakbone fever." Nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite are common. The rash typically begins on the arms or legs three to four days after the beginning of the fever. The illness can last up to 10 days, but complete recovery can take as long as a month. Older children and adults are usually sicker than young children.

Most dengue infections result in relatively mild illness, but some can progress to dengue hemorrhagic fever. With dengue hemorrhagic fever, the blood vessels start to leak and cause bleeding from the nose, mouth, and gums. Bruising can be a sign of bleeding inside the body. Without prompt treatment, the blood vessels can collapse, causing shock (dengue shock syndrome). Dengue hemorrhagic fever is fatal in about 5 percent of cases, mostly among children and young adults.

How soon after exposure do symptoms appear?

The time between the bite of a mosquito carrying dengue virus and the start of symptoms averages 4 to 6 days, with a range of 3 to 14 days. An infected person cannot spread the infection to other persons but can be a source of dengue virus for mosquitoes for about 6 days.

How is Dengue Fever diagnosed?

Dengue Fever is diagnosed by clinical symptoms and by specific blood tests.

Who is at risk for dengue?

Anyone who is bitten by an infected mosquito can get dengue fever. Risk factors for dengue hemorrhagic fever include a person's age and immune status, as well as the type of infecting virus. Persons who were previously infected with one or more types of dengue virus are thought to be at greater risk for developing dengue hemorrhagic fever if infected again.

What is the treatment for dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fever?

There is no specific treatment for dengue. Persons with dengue fever should rest and drink plenty of fluids. They should be kept away from mosquitoes for the protection of others. Dengue hemorrhagic fever is treated by replacing lost fluids. Some patients need transfusions to control bleeding.

Can Dengue Fever be treated?

There is no curative treatment for Dengue Fever. If there are no complications, recovery will occur within 1 to 2 weeks. Hospital care with intravenous fluids is usually necessary for individuals with Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever.

How long is an infected person infectious to others?

An individual infected with Dengue Fever is not directly infectious to other individuals except through sharing of blood contaminated needles. Untreated individuals, if bitten by Dengue Fever-capable mosquitoes, could infect a small number of mosquitoes. These could transmit Dengue Fever if they subsequently bite another human at least 1 to 2 weeks later, depending upon environmental conditions.

Where is dengue found?

Dengue viruses occur in most tropical areas of the world. Dengue is common in Africa, Asia, the Pacific, Australia, and the Americas. It is widespread in the Caribbean basin. Dengue is most common in cities but can be found in rural areas. It is rarely found in mountainous areas above 4,000 feet.

The mosquitoes that transmit dengue live among humans and breed in discarded tires, flower pots, old oil drums, and water storage containers close to human dwellings. Unlike the mosquitoes that cause malaria, dengue mosquitoes bite during the day.

Is there a vaccine to prevent Dengue Fever?

There is no vaccine which can prevent Dengue Fever, however such vaccines are in development.

Watchmen SCREENER out

Sunday, June 21, 2009
ROAR with another VHS SCREENER today, this time its of “Watchmen”. Watchmen is a 2009 action superhero film directed by Zack Snyder. Based on the 1986-1987 comic book series Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. Set in an alternate-history 1985, Watchmen follows a group of former vigilantes as tensions heighten between the United States and the Soviet Union while an investigation of an apparent conspiracy against them uncovers something even more grandiose and sinister. I actually saw this movie at the cinema when it first came out, didnt really know what to expect because i never really followed the comic books and came out and loved every second of the movie! I highly recommend watching this movie although you might want to wait for something better quality as the movie really deserves it but heres the SCREENER if you cant wait.

“Watchmen” is set in an alternate 1985 America in which costumed superheroes are part of the fabric of everyday society, and the “Doomsday Clock” - which charts the USA’s tension with the Soviet Union - is permanently set at five minutes to midnight. When one of his former colleagues is murdered, the washed up but no less determined masked vigilante Rorschach sets out to uncover a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes. As he reconnects with his former crime-fighting legion - a ragtag group of retired superheroes, only one of whom has true powers - Rorschach glimpses a wide-ranging and disturbing conspiracy with links to their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the future. Their mission is to watch over humanity… but who is watching the Watchmen?

Kaspersky Anti Virus 2010 And Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 Final

Kaspersky 2010 Final version's of Kaspersky Internet Security And Anti-Virus 2010 are now available for download, the latest version of the leading security software suites offers new features, a brand new GUI and performance improvements.

The new version has features like Kaspersky Safe Run (application sandboxing), Kaspersky Security Network/ Urgent Detection System and URL Advisor for added safety, a full-list of improvements in KAV 2010 and KIS 2010 follows.

New Security Features In KAV 2010 :

* Increased use of Kaspersky Security Network considerably decreases the threat response time, due to information received from other users. The service aims to minimize the time necessary to detect and neutralize new types of threats. When a user starts a program, the service checks it against white lists and Urgent Detection System lists on Kaspersky Lab's servers.
* The protection of personal user data has been extended and enhanced. For instance, Kaspersky Anti-Virus automatically prevents inadvertent users from accessing known phishing web sites, and blocks keylogger programs, which are designed to steal passwords and access codes.
* The new Script Emulator analyzes the behavior of scripts, to assess their potential harmfulness. It simulates the operation of the Java Script and Visual Basic Script engines, which are supported by default in Microsoft Internet Explorer and are built in to Microsoft Windows.
* The new IM Anti-Virus component ensures the safe operation of most instant messaging applications. The component scans messages for the presence of malicious objects.
* Improvements to the Virtual keyboard component provide safer entry of personal information, by protecting data from being intercepted by spyware and preventing screenshot capture.
* Kaspersky Anti-Virus includes Proactive Defense component which allows detecting previously unknown threats according to their behavior in the system. The analysis is based on the database of updatable heuristics – BSS (Behavior Stream Signature).
* Components of Kaspersky Anti-Virus can be temporarily disabled, to improve computer performance. This can be useful during the use of resource-hungry applications such as network games.
* Monitoring access to phishing websites and protection against phishing attacks are performed by scanning links in messages and on web pages, and also by using the database of phishing addresses when an attempt to access websites is detected. You can check whether a web address is included in the phishing database, using the Web Anti-Virus or IM Anti-Virus component.
* Improvements have been made to all the application's existing components, and particularly to the Heuristic analyzer.
* The anti-virus kernel of Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010 has been significantly improved, to provide more efficient malware detection. The application shows higher performance on Windows Vista operating systems, as compared to previous versions of Kaspersky Anti-Virus.
* Kaspersky Anti-Virus includes the URL scanning module managed by Web Anti-Virus. This module scans links on the web page, comparing the website addresses against its database of suspicious and phishing websites. This module is provided for Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox browsers as a plug-in.
* The update procedure has been improved. Kaspersky Anti-Virus's databases are now updated not only according to their schedule, but also when new security threats appear.
* The creation of Rescue Disks has been improved. The service should be used when the infection reaches a level at which the computer cannot be disinfected using either anti-virus applications, or malware removal utilities such as Kaspersky AVPTool. The improved Rescue Disks provide more efficient disinfection because malware programs do not gain control when the operating system is being loaded.

New Security Features In KIS 2010 :

* Improved HIPS (Host-based Intrusion Prevention System) technology assigns a danger rating to unknown programs. The Application Control component uses HIPS to define rules for new and already known applications, which may restrict their access to the file and operating systems.
* Innovative Sandbox technology has been implemented, which uses virtualization to create a secure environment for program execution. New software can be tested in this environment, which isolates the host operating system from all changes. There is no limit to the number of Internet browsers and other applications which can run simultaneously in a sandbox.
For instance, Kaspersky Internet Security automatically prevents inadvertent users from accessing known phishing web sites, and blocks keylogger programs, which are designed to steal passwords and access codes.
* Significant improvements to the Anti-Spam component now provide two methods for detecting spam: exact and expert. Exact methods apply strict filtering criteria to a message, which determine unambiguously whether or not a message is spam. Expert methods investigate email messages that have passed strict filtering criteria. As such messages cannot be unambiguously considered spam, the component calculates the probability that they are spam.
* Components of Kaspersky Internet Security can be temporarily disabled, to improve computer performance. This can be useful during the use of resource-hungry applications such as network games.
* Monitoring access to phishing websites and protection against phishing attacks are performed by scanning links in messages and on web pages, and also by using the database of phishing addresses when an attempt to access websites is detected. You can check whether a web address is included in the phishing database, using the Web Anti-Virus, IM Anti-Virus or Anti-Spam component.
* Improvements have been made to all the application's existing components, including the Firewall, Parental Control, and Anti-Spam components, and particularly the Heuristic analyzer.
* The anti-virus kernel of Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 has been significantly improved, to provide more efficient malware detection. The application shows higher performance on Windows Vista operating systems, as compared to previous versions of Kaspersky Internet Security.
* Kaspersky Internet Security includes the URL scanning module managed by Web Anti-Virus. This module scans links on the web page, comparing the website addresses against its database of suspicious and phishing websites. This module is provided for Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox browsers as a plug-in.
* The update procedure has been improved. Kaspersky Internet Security's databases are now updated not only according to their schedule, but also when new security threats appear.

Pakistan vs Sri Lanka Highlights - T20 World Cup Final Highlights

Pakistan wins the 2009 ICC World Twenty20 by beating Sri Lanka with 8 wickets. Afridi done it again for Pakistan at the right time to win the T20 World Cup. It was superb performance from Pakistan in both Batting and Bowling. Pakistan won the match without any pressure.

After seeing the 2 semi finals I decided that I’ll never ever make any guesses in a T20 match. So its and all Asian final here today at the mecca of cricket, Lords. Pakistan will take on Sri Lanka who didn’t loose a single match in this entire tournament. On the other hand for Pakistan, this will the second consecutive T20 world cup final but this time they want to make sure that they go one step further. I remember at the beginning of the tournament when Wasim Akram said that Pakistan could well be the champs this time. I found no reason to support that statement. Like everyone else, I thought it could again be India’s trophy else South Africa’s. I don’t know if that statement from Wasim was a patriotic one or out of some serious calculation, Kudos to him and also Pakistan for the way it played till now. Even though I stay in India and disappointed because India is out of the tournament, I want Pakistan to win this trophy as I understand how badly the Pakistan team wants to win this trophy for their country. This would surely bring a new ray of hope for its people and unite then even more. If the opening pair of Akmal and Shahzaib Hasan can play their part, the middle order is very experienced with the lights of Shoaib Malik, Younus Khan, Afridi, Misbah etc. The bowling for Pakistan is looking in superb form with Umer Gul being in top form. And Afridi with his leg cutter is looking good to take couple of wickets at least in this match.

On the other hand, Sri Lanka was never tested in its batting order. If Pakistan can get Sanath and Dilshan out early, then it’ll be very tough for the Lankan’s to recover.
